YEREVAN. – The sole equitable way to a comprehensive settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the exercising of the right to self-determination of its people.

President of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Galust Sahakyan, stated the abovementioned at his talk with a parliamentary delegation from Belgium.

Sahakyan noted that the Belgian delegation’s visit is carried out within the framework of the Armenian Genocide Centennial. In his words, it needs to be ensured that all countries recognize and condemn this tragedy, so it will never happen again. The NA speaker added that he is aware of the Belgian delegation members’ efforts in the recent passing of the Armenian Genocide resolution in their country.

Galust Sahakyan also underscored the Belgian parliamentary delegation’s forthcoming visit to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) stating that such visits neutralize the information isolation of Artsakh. He added that there is no alternative to a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. Sahakyan also expressed a conviction that it is impossible to increase the efficiency of the settlement process without Artsakh’s full participation in the peace talks.

The Belgian parliamentary delegation members, for their part, stated that they had many productive meetings Monday in the Armenian parliament.

They also briefed the NA speaker on the process of Armenian Genocide recognition in Belgium. The Belgian MPs noted that the scope of the said genocide resolution needs to be broadened to also include the genocides of the Pontic Greeks, Assyrians, and Syrians.

In addition, the Belgian delegation members reflected on their upcoming trip to Nagorno-Karabakh. In this context, they noted that their objective is to get acquainted with the situation on location, and present the respective real “picture” to the international community.
