YEREVAN. – Between 2014 and 2015, the number of countries that have recognized the Armenian Genocide increased from 15 to 24.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Shavarsh Kocharyan, on Friday noted the abovementioned at the experts’ forum entitled “I remember and demand,” and which is convened within the framework of the Armenian Genocide Centennial commemoration events.
In his words, in the case when, previously, the denial of genocides was criminalized in solely two countries, now there are four such countries. To note, Greece and Cyprus this year joined Switzerland and Slovakia, in this respect.
“During this time, Armenia has recognized the Assyrian and Greek genocides in the Ottoman Empire, and now, the world is very attentive to the prevention of such crimes,” stressed Kocharyan. “Wide circles are already very well aware that not condemning former genocides, and not preventing them at the time, creates fertile ground for new ones.”
