The prosecutor's office of the Southern District of New York initiated an investigation on journalistic publications based on the so-called Panamanian papers.

The Guardian, a participant of that investigation, uploaded on its website a copy of the letter that the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists received from the American prosecutor’s office, reported Russian Service of BBC.

The letter says that a criminal case is initiated based on journalistic publications that refer to Panama papers. At the same time, the letter does not specify what kind of suspicion and who those publications were referring to.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists studied 11 million documents of Mossack Fonseca, the Panamanian law firm, which were handed to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung by an unknown person.

The results of the investigation have been simultaneously published in several major world outlets, such as Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the Guardian, BBC Panorama program, the Russian Novaya Gazeta.

The publications referred to offshore companies that Fonseca Mossack registered for many world leaders and their kins. In total, the publications referred to 72 leaders of the different states .
