YEREVAN. – The Sicilian Regional Assembly, the legislative body of Sicily Region of Italy, on Wednesday unanimously recognized the Armenian Genocide, and became the 105th Italian local government to acknowledge this tragedy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informed Armenian News-NEWS.am that in the respective resolution, the Sicilian Regional Assembly informed about its support and solidarity to the Armenian people’s fight for the recognition of the historical truth and the protection of inalienable rights.

The resolution also calls upon Sicily’s regional and Italy’s national governments to jointly support Armenian Genocide recognition events, and to disseminate the knowledge of historical facts, in the name of peace, democracy, and rights of nations to self-determination.

The draft of this resolution was submitted by MPs Salvatore Cordaro, Antonino D’Asero, Alfio Papale, and Bernadette Felice Grasso.

In 2000, the Italian Parliament recognized the Armenian Genocide.
