YEREVAN. – Based on a complaint by the European Union (EU) office in Armenia, the country’s law enforcement uncovered a case of embezzlement of grants last year, according to Zhoghovurd daily.

“Zhoghovurd tried to find out from EU Ambassador to Armenia Piotr Świtalski [who is Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia] how this incident will affect the processes of providing grants to Armenia. In response, the ambassador said: ‘Now, everything is in the hands of the relevant authorities in Armenia our procedures are transparent, the process of accepting [grant] applications is fair, and the [respective] contest rules are successful. 

‘“[But] independent of our will, we always come across people who have hidden and bad intentions. I hope that the publicizing of these incidents would hold back those people who do not apply for EU grant programs with noble intentions. But we cannot rule out similar situations in the future.

‘“It’s just that the people of Armenia, including the NGOs, need to realize that sooner or later we will be able to expose similar cases,”’ Zhoghovurd wrote.
