The government of Italy has received the confidence vote of the members of the  Chamber of Deputies during the discussion of the bill on the recognition of civil  unions between the members of one sex.

369 MPs voted for the government’s confidence, 193 voting against it and two abstaining, Reuters writes. The final voting on the document will take place Wednesday, but it will already be formal, TASS reports.

In case the lower chamber turned down the government’s proposal, PM Matteo Renzi would have to resign, since the government put the bill on voting, linking its adoption with the issue of confidence to the chamber.

The recognition of civil unions actually means that the same-sex couples will be able to take advantage of a number of rights, which those in legal marriage exercise. Among them are partly the inheritance of property, right to take the partner’s surname and opportunity to visit him/her in the hospital.

Nevertheless, the bill doesn’t provide for the official marriage between the representatives of the same sex, as well as adoption of children by them.
