South African police fired stun grenades, rubber bullets and teargas at hundreds of students who marched through the university's campus in Johannesburg, Reuters reported.

According to the newspaper, protesters at South Africa's Wits University attacked police vehicles with rocks and overturned another on Tuesday, as violence in nationwide demonstrations over high tuition fees escalated.

"Following yesterday's harassment of our staff, we have no choice but to deploy police around campus," university spokeswoman Shirona Patel said.

Protests in South Africa have been going on for over a month. Demonstrators support free secondary and higher vocational education.

Collisions of protesters and security forces have begun after students held a march to protest against recommendation of the government to increase fees for university education by 8%.
