Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, has won Sunday’s presidential runoff vote in the country.

According to the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova, after counting of the 99.81 percent of the ballots that were cast in the election, it was found out that 52.4 percent of the voters elected Dodon, whereas Maia Sandu, the single candidate of the country’s pro-European forces, received 47.6 percent of the votes.

For the past seven years, Igor Dodon sharply criticized the policy of the ruling Alliance for European Integration. He favors Moldova’s accession into the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union—which includes Armenia, and giving Russian the status of second official language in Moldova.
