In January, Brussels and London should begin negotiations on a transit period of about two years from the moment of the UK's withdrawal from the EU. This was stated by the head of the European Council Donald Tusk at a press conference following the meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May in Brussels, Tass reports.
He voiced a number of tough conditions for Brussels for the second stage of the negotiations, including that during this period the UK will have to comply with all EU norms, pay to the budget and not participate in decision-making.
Tusk said he intends to recommend the heads of state and government to start negotiations on the transit period, so that the citizens and business have full clarity about the situation. Britain requested a transition period of two years, in order to be able to remain a member of the single market and the customs union at that time. He added that they will be ready to discuss this, but, naturally, they have their own conditions.
The United Kingdom will be under European judicial supervision [of the European Court of Justice]. Naturally, the decision-making process in the EU will be implemented at this time by 27 countries of the community, without the participation of the UK.
