An ongoing state of emergency set a backdrop for violations of human rights in Turkey, Amnesty International said in its newly released International Report 2017/18.

Dissent was ruthlessly suppressed, with journalists, political activists and human rights defenders among those targeted.

According to the report, civil society representatives, as well as the general population, widely practised selfcensorship, deleting social media posts and refraining from making public comments for fear of dismissal from their jobs, closure of their organizations or criminal prosecution.
