Over 76 thousand migrants entered the US across the Mexican border without the necessary documents- over twice as many as in February 2018, NY Times reported.
“This is clearly both a border security and a humanitarian crisis,” said Kevin K. McAleenan, commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.
According to McAleenan, families and unaccompanied children make up almost 60 percent of those detained during illegal border crossing. Most of them come from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and other countries in the region. In order to cope with the situation, the border guard requested additional medical assistance for migrants in custody.
