The recount of votes began in Istanbul after the ruling Justice and Development Party appealed against the voting results, as the opposition candidate nearly won the municipal elections, Reuters reported. 

The AKP received the majority of votes throughout the country in the March 31 municipal elections, but lost Ankara, Istanbul and a number of major cities.

The AKP representatives protested on Tuesday the election results amid violations in the ballots in Ankara and Istanbul.
