US President Donald Trump began the construction of the wall not only on the US-Mexico border but also around his own residence in Washington - the White House. The area of the fence along Pennsylvania Avenue, from where the most famous and beloved tourist view of this landmark opens, was closed with a solid white building fence, Daily Mail reported.
The residence of the American leader is still visible from the street. The fence is covered with a white cloth, which contains some of the details of the project, as well as archival images of how the White House looked in previous eras.
According to the plans described on the National Park Service website, a new barrier about 13 feet high will be built using intruder detection technologies and in such a way that it is almost impossible to climb.
Unauthorized entry
In 2017, the United States Secret Service received permission from the relevant federal authorities to erect a perimeter for the White House. Intentions to make a higher fence at the Washington residence of the US President emerged after a series of high-profile incidents involving unauthorized entry of outsiders into the guarded territory of the complex on Pennsylvania Avenue, 1600.
Perhaps the most scandalous incident of this kind was the invasion of the American citizen and veteran of the armed forces Omar J. Gonzalez on September 19, 2014, directly into the White House. He managed not only to get over the fence of the White House and easily cross the lawn but also to get inside the mansion.
Wooden fence
Construction work will be carried out gradually and will continue until 2021 inclusive. As a result, the current wall will be completely replaced. At the same time, some of its sections will be preserved for history and sent to the museum. In general, the appearance of the new fence will not be much different from the existing, not counting the height.
For more than two centuries of the White House’s existence (construction began in 1792), the shape and appearance of its fence changed several times. So, during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), the fence was made of wooden poles. Then, instead of it, a stone wall was installed, which was later replaced with a metal fence. Historians believe that it was originally painted in dark green. In recent years, the fence has traditionally been painted black.
