Representatives of the Canadian National Police and their UK counterparts are currently discussing security issues for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle in a North American country, CBC reported referring to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada Bill Blair.

"I know this is an issue of discussion for many Canadians," Blair said. "Discussions are taking place between our security officials in the RCMP and security officials in the U.K. as it relates to security obligations and how most appropriately to cover these security costs."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier reportedly had assured UK Queen Elizabeth II that Ottawa would be responsible for part of the cost of protecting the royal people during their stay in Canada. Trudeau later refuted these allegations, saying that he had not discussed such issues with the queen.

On January 8, Prince Harry and his wife announced their intention to renounce the status of senior members of the royal family and secure financial independence, as well as living in two countries - in Canada and the UK. Meghan Markle left the UK almost immediately after this announcement and returned to Canada, where she spent the Christmas holidays with her family, and now she is there with her son. Prince Harry also flew to Canada last week.

On January 18, Buckingham Palace announced that the couple would no longer be able to officially represent Queen Elizabeth II on official trips, perform other ceremonial duties and use the title of Their Highnesses. It was also announced that the prince's family would no longer receive budgetary funds, which covered the expenses of the duke and duchess of Sussex, linked to their official role as members of the royal family.
