YEREVAN. – Twelve orphanages, four of them private, are presently functioning in Armenia, says the report by National Statistical Service.

In 2010 the number of children living in orphanages has increased making 1240. Last year 77 children were adopted, while 83 returned to their families.

Only six orphanages have satisfactory conditions, the rest are in need of repair.

A total of $ 6.8 million is allocated to orphanages annually, about $5,500 is granted to each child.

The majority of funds, 65 % is allocated by the government, while the rest – by philanthropists and other sources. Private orphanages are not financed by the government.
