The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) intends to call on the Senate’s Committee on Foreign Relations to address precise questions to John Heffern, nominee to serve as a U.S. Ambassador to Armenia in the course of hearings.

ANCA’s aim is to reveal Heffern’s position on the Armenian Genocide, the Karabakh issue and prospects for development of Armenia-U.S. ties, ANCA Spokeswoman Elizabeth Chuljian told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Chuljian noted that ANCA needs to study statements previously voiced by Heffern and his position.

“We cannot voice our position on nomination before that,” she said.

Chuljian stressed the Armenian community of U.S. does not need an ambassador who will “play on words”.

Commenting on the fact that Heffern worked for former pro-Turkish Congressman Bereuter, ANCA Spokeswoman said we should consider Heffern’s position on the Armenian Genocide, not that of his “tutor”.

U.S. President Barack Obama nominated John A. Heffern for the post of U.S. Ambassador to Armenia. Marie Yovanovitch will complete her 3-year mission as U.S. Ambassador in June 2011. She will return to Washington and take up the post of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Northern and Central Europe.
