YEREVAN. – The Constitutional Court of Armenia should have the right to independently interpret the norms of the Constitution. President of the Court of Cassation Yervand Khundkaryan, one of the candidates for a judge of the Constitutional Court—and who is nominated to this post by the General Assembly of Judges—said this during the debates on the candidacies for judges of the Constitutional Court at Monday’s session of the National Assembly.

According to him, the need for further revision of the Constitution of Armenia cannot be ruled out. "Improving the institute of interpretation of the Basic Law is an alternative to revising the Constitution. When applying any norm of the Constitution, it is necessary to reveal the content of that norm. It is in this matter that the Constitutional Court must manifest itself most effectively. I believe the Constitutional Court should have independent powers, by officially interpreting the constitutional norms," Khundkaryan explained.
