YEREVAN. –Armenian Parliament has postponed the vote on amnesty bill till May 26.

Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said he highly appreciates the initiative proposed by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

Recalling that it is ninth amnesty in Armenia Abrahamyan called it “unprecedented”.

“This amnesty is both a humanistic and politically important step that will have an unprecedented importance for the domestic political developments,” he said.

It gives a chance to create an atmosphere of tolerance in the country and will finally defuse political tension, Abrahamyan added.

At the same time he stressed that amnesty should not be confused with unreasonable softness, which can lead to permissiveness and anarchy.
