The EU intends to invite some states, including Armenia, to hold stress test for nuclear power plants.

Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Switzerland and Ukraine will participate in stress tests, said EU energy commissioner Gunther Oettinger.

The European Union has reached a broad agreement on the criteria for ‘stress testing’ the region’s 143 nuclear power plant, EU observer reports.

The tests will see a re-assessment of the safety margins used in the licensing of European nuclear power plants, checking for their ability to withstand a combination of natural disasters such as the earthquake and subsequent tsunami as happened in Japan, the wesbite reports.

The only regional nuclear power plant is located near the Armenian town of Metsamor (30 km to south from Yerevan).
