TBILISI. - President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and President of Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey discussed Switzerland’s mediatory role in the Georgian-Russian relations in Tbilisi.

The situation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia was the focal point of the talks. The sides noted that after the rupture of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Russia, Switzerland acts as a mediator between the two countries and should increase this role.

Prior to the meeting, an official welcoming ceremony for President of Switzerland was held at the presidential residence.

Calmy-Rey will hold a series of meetings with Georgian top officials within the framework of her visit.
