Senate Democratic leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox News he heard from police there was shooting in the Capitol building.

He also called on US President Donald Trump to issue a statement in connection with the incident. 

Donald Trump, in turn, called on his supporters to remain peaceful.

“I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!" Trump tweeted.
