The European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) strongly welcomes the recent general amnesty adopted by the National Assembly of Armenia on a proposal by President Serzh Sargsyan.
In a statement issued on Monday the ECR Group says the amnesty follows the start of a promising dialogue between the government and an opposition group, the Armenian National Congress, in a climate of mutual respect.
“The ECR encourages all actors to take this opportunity to continue and reinforce this dialogue and thus contribute to the maturing democracy in Armenia, based on the European values. These developments are also in line with the ‘partnership for reform’ which is currently being developed jointly by the European Commission and the Government of Armenia.
The ECR calls upon all political forces in Armenia to subscribe to this constructive approach also in the light of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia,” reads the statement.
The ECR is a center-right political group in the European Parliament.
