YEREVAN. - Revival of Armenia-Turkey rapprochement greatly depends on the outcome of Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian Presidents’ meeting in Kazan, expert in Turkic studies Artak Shakaryan told a press conference in Yerevan on Tuesday.

According to him, if Karabakh conflict resolution achieves progress in Kazan, it will give new impetus to the Armenia-Turkey reconciliation, as Turkey believes the process is related to Karabakh conflict settlement.

“Meanwhile, amid the alignment of forces in the newly-elected Turkish parliament, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan falls short of 5 votes to submit the protocols for discussion and he will seek support from other political groups. In this regard, progress in the accords’ ratification is not real,” Shakaryan noted.

The expert stressed rapprochement with Armenia is not a priority issue for Erdogan, as solving Kurdish terror acts, ensuring adoption of constitutional reforms, sending “Mavi Marmara-2” flotilla with humanitarian aid to the Gaza and presence of 6,900 Syrian refugees are top priority issues for Turks today.

“Armenia-Turkey process is possible through several scenarios, first, ratification of one of the protocols. The presence of two accords creates basis for maneuvering for both sides. If Karabakh conflict resolution achieves some progress, Turkey will ratify the protocol mending fences with Armenia. Azerbaijan will give a negative response to the opening of Armenia-Turkey border and establishment of diplomatic relations will have economic consequences. Baku will take it more calmly,” Shakaryan concluded.
