Serious work has been carried out in recent years to implement transport reforms, and citizens will soon see the results, Mayor Hrachya Sarkisyan said.

His remarks came during the meeting of Yerevan Council of Elders on 8 February.

He added that at the end of February or beginning of March the program on purchase of 12-meter buses in number of 100 units will be completed, and at the end of 2022 these buses will already be in Armenia.

According to him, there were maintenance problems with the new buses, so their operation was overdue. Sargsyan said a draft decision will be presented, the adoption of which will allow private companies to participate in the transport network reform tender: the companies that have presented not the lowest total fare, but the lowest fare per kilometer will be given priority.

He also pointed to shortcomings in road markings, the condition of which, according to his assessment, is better in the regions than in Yerevan. "This problem, as well as the problem of traffic lights, also needs to be solved," Sargsyan said.

The Mayor underlined that a press conference will be convened to provide clarifications in connection with the traffic problem.

The issue of swift reform of the transport network was one of the main promises of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's team back in the capital's "revolutionary" elections in September 2018. People in Yerevan were even promised to build a new metro station back then.
