Pawel Herczynski, the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Georgia, has said that the Georgian leadership is pushing the country's people away from EU membership, despite the fact that the Georgian people want to join the EU. Herczynski emphasized that under the current government of Georgia, the country will never become a member of the EU, reports SOVA.

Herczynski considers granting Georgia the EU membership candidate status—on December 14, 2023—as one of the greatest successes of his diplomatic career.

The diplomat said that during the last few months, everything was done to open the doors of Georgia, thanks to the merits of the Ukrainian people, who protect not only their country, but also the civilized world.

But what happened after Georgia received the status of an EU membership candidate? The majority of the population and the opposition parties want to join the EU, but the government is pushing the Georgian people away from that membership. The members of the Georgian government are far from the values of the EU, said the latter’s envoy to Georgia.

Herczynski hopes that after the October elections in Georgia, the latter will be back on the EU road, which is currently suspended. The EU is ready to resume negotiations with Georgia if it has a democratic government, he added.

But if this government violates the EU fundamental principles: freedom, democracy, rule of law, and human rights, then Georgia will not become an EU member, Herczynski said.

The diplomat informed that the EU parliamentary discussions on the matter of Georgia will take place on Tuesday in Brussels. The EU ambassador to Georgia added that there is a report on expansion in Georgia ahead, and it will be issued in the second half of October.
