Turkey has modernized 171 tanks and is negotiating with the Chile Government to overhaul the tanks there, Businessweek e-source informs referring to the Associated Press.

A ceremony on the occasion of completed works was held Nov. 12 in Arifiye city 150 km east of Istanbul. There Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul said that the country’s defense company Aselsan has successfully completed modernized the German-made Leopard-1 tanks.

According to the source, “the company installed high-tech fire control systems on Leopard-1 A1 and A4 tanks.”

In addition, Israel Military Industries are also upgrading 170 Turkish army M60 A1 tanks.

It is known that Turkey began to prioritize development of its defense industry and intends to construct “its own modern indigenous tank,” Businessweek reads referring to AP.
