More than a hundred cultural and media organizations in Ukraine have been left without support after the US Agency for International Development (USAID) programs were suspended, writes Spanish newspaper El Pais, which spoke with sources at the UN mission in Ukraine.

Most of the small independent Ukrainian media outlets were receiving funding from USAID. The aforesaid suspension had the most serious impact on investigative publications Bihus.Info and Slidstvo.Info; US funding made up more than 80 percent at both of these media outlets.

Several other Ukrainian media outlets have also reported difficulties. For example, Hromadske asked its readers to support this publication, as some projects that its editorial staff was implementing thanks to grants have been suspended.

Ukraine has been one of the largest recipients of US humanitarian and economic aid, El Pais writes. During the almost three years of war, the country has received more than 34 billion euros in non-military aid through the USAID. In 2023, the amount of aid totaled 16.5 billion euros, while the average amount of aid provided by the USAID to other countries is 545 million euros, the aforesaid Spanish daily notes.
