White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz gave a first-person account of the moment he told “still-disputing” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that it was time for him to leave the White House after a historically contentious Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump, CNN reported.

After the press left, both sides retreated to separate rooms, and in a Saturday interview with Fox News, Waltz revealed that he, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials “advised the president, almost unanimously advised the president, that after this insult in the Oval Office, we just don't see how we can move forward, that any further interaction from this point forward will only go in the opposite direction.”

According to CNN, Waltz was sent to convey the message that Zelensky was no longer welcome.

When asked by Fox News if Zelensky realized what had happened, Waltz said, “No, he didn't. Frankly, his team did. His ambassador and counselor practically - I mean, they were practically in tears wishing that the matter would move forward. But Zelensky argued anyway.”

According to Waltz, he told Zelensky, “Time is not on your side here. Time is not on your side on the battlefield. Time is not on your side in terms of the situation in the world, and most importantly, U.S. aid and taxpayer patience are not unlimited.”

He added that Zelensky “didn't realize that there's a new sheriff in town. This is a new president, and we intend to use a new approach to peace.”
