An eruption has been recorded at Semeru volcano in Indonesia's East Java province the observatory reports, according to Antara news agency.

The ash rose from the volcano's crater to a height of 1,000 meters, or 4,676 meters above sea level, and is spreading southwest.

The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has advised local residents to exercise caution and stay within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano's crater due to the risk of erupting hot rocks.

Semeru is the fourth highest volcano in Indonesia, standing at 3,676 meters above sea level, and is the highest peak on the island of Java.
