Democratic Party member, Muslim candidate Zohran Mamdani, 34, has won the New York mayoral election, NBC News reports.

Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Party rival Curtis Sliwa. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who had launched a third-party reelection campaign after winning as the Democratic Party’s candidate in the 2021 election, dropped out of the race in September and endorsed Cuomo last month.

Mamdani’s victory marks a rapid rise in New York politics—since launching his campaign about a year ago, which has transformed him from an almost unknown state assembly member who barely was registered to run into the new leader of America’s largest city. Mamdani plans to freeze rent prices, introduce universal childcare, launch a free bus program, and open city-run grocery stores.
