Iran will import Russian gas through pipelines from Azerbaijan in accordance with the agreements reached in a major deal between Tehran and Moscow two months ago, Press TV reported.

According to Fars News Agency, Iran will buy about 9 million cubic meters of gas per day from Russia and another 6 million cubic meters per day in a swap deal to supply consumers in the south of the country.

According to an internal Iranian Oil Ministry report, the purchase and swap arrangements are linked to a $40 billion deal signed in July between Iran's state oil company NIOC and Russia's Gazprom.

Earlier reports indicated that Iran could take delivery of Russian gas from Turkmenistan in order to swap supplies to Turkey and Iraq. However, new evidence suggests that Iran will use gas supplies from Russia of 15 million cubic meters per day to strengthen its domestic supply network to densely populated regions in the northwest, while being able to export increased amounts of natural gas to Turkey and Iraq through pipelines in the west.

Iran has already concluded gas swap agreements with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

According to Fars, Iran will supply Russian gas to consumers in the south in the form of 6 million cubic meters of gas per day in the form of LNG. Gazprom will be a partner in the liquefaction process.
