Disbelief, anger, and heartbreak. Ruben Vardanyan, a man of compassion and selflessness, has been a rock of support for the people of Artsakh, and what has happened is beyond comprehension. Dr. Tom Catena, a world-renowned humanitarian and the first chairman of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, expressed his sentiments in a microblog post on X (former Twitter).
“My prayers are with Ruben and his family,” he added.
Ruben Vardanyan's wife, Veronica Zonabend, revealed that her husband had been arrested and captured by Azerbaijani authorities at the border while trying to leave Artsakh, along with thousands of other Armenians.
The State Border Service of Azerbaijan also confirmed the detention of Ruben Vardanyan, the former Minister of State of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), as he attempted to leave Artsakh, and they published a corresponding photograph of his detainment.
