In the course of the Brussels meeting European Foreign Ministers will discuss Sweden’s proposal to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

While Britain supports the initiative, Germany, Italy and France oppose it, Haaretz reads. According to the source, the Swedish proposal says East Jerusalem will be recognized “the capital of Palestine.” Presently, European FMs failed to agree on the proposal wording. Thus, France promotes the idea that the city should become capital of both Israel and Palestine.

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency quotes Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon as saying, “The Europeans should not dictate the outcome of negotiations in advance.”

Israel strongly opposes Swedish draft resolution. “Israel's Foreign Ministry warned the move would damage the EU's ability to be a Mideast mediator,” says the New York Times.
