December 13, 2009 Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was attacked during a rally organized by the ruling party “The people of freedom” in the central Duomo’s square, Milan.

After the speech, a man came up to Berlusconi and hit him with a certain object in the face, France-Presse agency reports.

As a result 73-year-old Berlusconi suffered a fractured nose, two broken teeth and cuts to his lips, Reuters informs. Presently, he is under medical supervision in one of the hospitals in Milan.

The police arrested the attacker-a 42-year-old Italian man named Massimo Tartaglia who had been under treatment for mental problems for 10 years, the source reports. However, according to the consulting doctor, Tartaglia was not a danger to society, Italian media reports.

The attack on the Prime Minister caused a stir in Italian society. According to Italian president Giorgio Napolitano, the assault on the Prime-Minister is very serious. He condemned the incident, offered his sympathies to Berlusconi and called “to stop a wave of violence”.
