Armenia supported by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) volunteered to assess the effectiveness of its competition law and policy. The initiative is aimed at strengthening country's competition law and creation of competitive, efficient and pro-business market environment, the UNCTAD website reads.

Voluntary Peer Review of Competition Law and Policy is carried out with UNCTAD support and funded by German technical cooperation agency GTZ. The report from this Voluntary Peer Review will be presented and discussed at the Sixth United Nations Conference to Review the Set, in 2010. The report results will be used by UNCTAD and Armenia to design appropriate technical assistance activities to reinforce the effectiveness of competition law in the country.

In this context, a number of meetings between UNCTAD and local key actors in competition field were held: the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (Armenia's competition authority), the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Justice, the Armenian Administrative Court, the Central Bank of Armenia, sector regulators, private law firms, and industry and consumer organizations. The project so far UNCTAD conducted a first fact-finding mission in Yerevan, Armenia, from 24 to 28 November 2009. The mission was led by Mr. Hassan Qaqaya, Head of the Competition Policy and Consumer Protection Branch.
