January 22, 2010 Georgia quits Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

As Chairman of IPA CIS Council Sergei Mironov stated earlier, according to IPA procedures, Georgia’s statement on the withdrawal from CIS enters into effect after 6 months from application's submission.

“Georgia is no longer CIS IPA member starting from January 22, 2010,” Mironov outlined.

Georgian delegation did not participate in CIS IPA activities since August 2008. The resolution terminating with respect to Georgia the “Agreement on the Creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States” was adopted by Georgian Parliament on August 14, 2008.

As NEWS.am reported previously, January 18 Georgia officially seceded from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Nonetheless, it remained a party to multilateral economic agreements within CIS framework.

The withdrawal was initiated by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on August 12, 2008 in protest at Russian military invasion to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
