YEREVAN. – Several safety measures have been carried out at Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), chairman Ashot Martirosyan of the State Committee on Nuclear Safety Regulation told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

As a result, the seismic risk damage of the plant’s reactor core is reduced by 25 percent. In addition, the installation of three new absorbers for the pipes has reduced the seismic risk by two percent, and fortification of the walls of the first reactor’s water reservoir has reduced the seismic risk by six percent.

In line with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Armenia report, which was presented in August, in the case of an emergency at the NPP, the risk group comprises 95,700 people. Notwithstanding this, the taken measures have considerably reduced the possible risks.  

As Ashot Martirosyan told reporters, the demand by Armenia’s neighbors for the termination of the activities of Metsamor’s second reactor is not convincing. The Armenian NPP’s safety level is equivalent to that of similar objects in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
