The upcoming Armenian-Russian-Azerbaijani presidential meeting is not of fundamental importance. It will be held amid an obvious change in Russia’s priorities not in Armenia’s favor. During the meeting one more attempt will certainly be made to pressure Armenia into consenting to agreements based on the Madrid Principles, which are unacceptable to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), said Karen Oghanjanyan, Coordinator of the Helsinki Initiative-92.

“I think the Armenian authorities are well aware that one more concession at the negotiations will put an end to the in incumbent power. So the Armenian leader will try to defend the Armenian side’s interests by means of convincing arguments. Moscow too is aware of the Armenian leaders’ delicate situation, as the end of the incumbent Armenian authorities would inaugurate Russia’s absolute control over Armenia’s political and economic life. So Moscow will try to maintain balance between its economic interests due to better relations with Azerbaijan and Armenia’s political interests. The Medevedev-Aliyev Sargsyan will not produce any results much less so a breakthrough,” Oghanjanyan said.
