The residents of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, looted the stores while waiting for the “end of the world,” and the government was forced to send in special police units to the city.  

A great flow of stock-gathering people commenced in the Río Negro province, as well. But the police here were unable to establish law and order, due to the limited number of police officers.

The looting spree also reached Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Chaco, Lanacion.com reports, as minimarkets were looted. The police fired shots in the air to calm the masses, fontanka.ru writes. 

But the cause for this public disorder and looting is not at all the anticipated “apocalypse.” Instead, it is the anniversary of the tragic events that occurred on December 21, 2001, and which had claimed the lives of thirty people. And as a result of this tragedy, Argentina’s unpopular president Fernando de la Rúa had resigned from office, Moskovsky Komsomolets informs.
