YEREVAN. – As a result of the last National Assembly elections in Armenia, the opposition likewise entered the parliament, and this demonstrated that the great majority of the country’s political forces had recognized those elections. Armenian Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation Director, political scientist Stepan Grigoryan stated this during a press conference on Tuesday.    

In his words, when the Prosperous Armenia Party decided not to run and not to support the candidate of another political force in next February’s presidential elections, it became clear that there will not be a strong competition for the office of the president. As a result, incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan will be reelected in normal fashion, and the elections will be conducted without major violations.   

In Grigoryan’s view, the body politic and the serving president, however, need competition during the elections so that Sargsyan would not receive 97 percent of the votes. And based on the interests of the entire nation, some competitiveness should be created.
