YEREVAN. – The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should not be equated with the Abkhazian and the South Ossetian conflicts, political scientist Aleksander Manasyan stated during a press conference on Tuesday.  

“At present, the Georgian society is completely against the recognition of Karabakh’s independence. In their view, any action toward the implementation of the right to self-determination could adversely affect the Abkhazian and the South Ossetian matters,” Manasyan explained.  

“[But] The Azerbaijan SSR was the sole USSR republic with respect to whose territories an international agreement was signed. [And] That alone makes it possible to set the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict apart from all other post-Soviet conflicts,” the political analyst noted.    

“In the Soviet times, official Baku used to threaten Moscow [by saying]: ‘If you resolve the Karabakh issue, the entire USSR will collapse.’ Now, Baku declares this to the world community [by saying]: ‘If you accept the independence of Karabakh, Canada, Great Britain and other countries likewise will collapse.’ [But] We [that is, the Armenian party to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict] have our [own] arguments and we should not put them aside,” Aleksander Manasyan added.
