YEREVAN. – The climate is very restless at the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), since everything is being done so that the forthcoming elections are conducted not solely peacefully but, also, effectively—that is, openly and transparently. RPA Vice Chairman and the party’s National Assembly faction leader Galust Sahakyan stated this during a press conference on Wednesday.

In response to the query as to who he considers as the most competitive presidential candidate, Sahakyan said this is for the people to decide. Also, he expressed a view that RPA leader, incumbent president, and presidential candidate Serzh Sargsyan will not take part in any debate.

“The people should decide this. But I still do not see a [political] figure with such substance,” he added.

Galust Sahakyan noted that changes will be made following the presidential elections on February 18, but solely time will tell the degree of these changes.

Also, the RPA vice chairman stated that they do not plan to completely eliminate the political opposition in Armenia because, as per Sahakyan, unfortunately there is a need for opposition in the country.
