YEREVAN. – Even though the action which Shant Harutyunyan had organized was an overly emotional protest, it did not pose a real danger in itself.
Armenia’s opposition Free Democrats Party Vice-Chairwoman Anush Sedrakyan stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Wednesday.
Sedrakyan added that Harutyunyan’s action aimed to be a protest.
In her words, it should be demanded that this incident be treated from the vantage point of justice and humanism.
“My main concern is that this incident is suddenly labeled with the strictest letter of the law. I consider Shant to be a man who has truly suffered for his political views,” Anush Sedrakyan said.
To note, Shant Harutyunyan who heads a nationalist party, and who had announced about starting a revolution, on November 5—and with close to several dozen supporters wearing Guy Fawkes “Anonymous masks”—started a march toward the Presidential Palace, but the police stopped the march. As a result, there was a scuffle, and the police detained 38 activists. Subsequently, 20 of them, including Harutyunyan, were arrested. As a result of the melee, about a dozen people, including police officers, were hospitalized.
