YEREVAN. – Today’s situation in Armenia is the same as it was back in 1920, opposition National Self-Determination Union (NSU) Chairman, ex-presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan stated at a press conference on Tuesday.

In Hayrikyan’s words, in 1920, it was Lenin who was selling weapons to Turks, and, now, it is Russian President Vladimir Putin doing the same thing.

“Today, the situation is the same. Everyone works with orders, whereas 40 percent of the population of Armenia is against the Customs Union. Moreover, it tends to maintain its sovereignty,” Hayrikyan added.

In the NSU leader’s conviction, if Armenia becomes a member in the Customs Union, this will be the final destruction of the Armenians because, as per Paruyr Hayrikyan, the Russians are doing everything so that Armenia is left without Armenians.

To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union. And in response to this development, the European Union had stated that the signing of the Armenia-EU Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area agreement is now doubtful.
