YEREVAN. – The fact that the majority of the population of Armenia is in favor of the country’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) is explained by the age-old friendship between the Armenian and the Russian peoples.

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction member Samvel Farmanyan stated the abovementioned. He noted this at Thursday’s NA deliberations with respect to the ratification of the treaty on Armenia’s planned accession to the aforesaid Russia-led union. In his words, the EEU accession will make Armenian-Russian relations grow deeper.

As for the part of the Armenian population which is against this accession, in Farmanyan’s view, this is due to the fact that they are less informed about the nature of this union.

The RPA MP also stressed that Armenia needs to continue making all efforts not to repeat the mistake of Ukraine, and not find itself at the center of the conflict of interests of Europe and Russia.

Samvel Farmanyan added that Armenia has decided to join the Eurasian Economic Union also because of the need to ensure its security.
