YEREVAN. – President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday received Danilo Astori, the Vice President and the Speaker of the Chamber of Senators of Uruguay, who is on a visit to Armenia.

The president noted that the ending 2014 is a promising and important year for the development of Armenian-Uruguayan relations, and it opens new prospects for the further deepening of correlations between the two countries.

Sargsyan also stated that he remembers with the warmest feelings his state visit to Uruguay. The President stressed that, during this visit, he was convinced yet again to the respectful demeanor that exists in Uruguay toward Armenia and the Armenian nation, and the sincere desire to enhance relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Astori, for his part, stated that the warm friendly attitude toward Armenia has solid foundations among the leadership and society of Uruguay.

The interlocutors reflected on the avenues for developing Armenian-Uruguayan economic collaboration, and they also stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy.

Separately, the President once again thanked the authorities and the people of Uruguay for recognizing, in 1965, the Armenian Genocide, and emphasized that this decision had launched the process of international recognition of this crime. In his words, when it comes to friendship based on the same values, nothing can undermine it.

In addition, Serzh Sargsyan highly praised Uruguay’s balanced position on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
