The villagers still remember their Armenian neighbors with whom they once lived together, and the good memories compel them to preserve the graves of their former neighbors, reported Radikal daily of Turkey.
Burunkisla prefect Necati Yalcin noted that they had lived together with the Armenians until 1966. In his words, after leaving the village, however, some of these Armenians visit their fellow villagers and the graves of their relatives every year.
“The former kaimakam [i.e., the official charged with governing the provincial district] had the cemetery of our Armenian brothers be surrounded by a wall so that the strangers would not damage the graves. After that, the villagers voluntarily care for and clean up the graves of the Armenians,” Yalcin said.
