YEREVAN. – Looking for a Ukrainian Euromaidan in the recent electricity price hike protests in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan is an unrewarding task.

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov, who is also Vice President of the National Assembly (NA), told the above-said to Armenian News-NEWS.am. He noted this commenting on the statement by Head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, who believes that the recent Electric Yerevan demonstrations were a Euromaidan attempt.

“The events at Baghramyan [Avenue in Downtown Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia] were not political,” said Sharmazanov. “It was a citizens’ initiative, during which the country’s residents had taken to the streets to resolve a social problem.”

As for the European Union (EU) flags being waved during these demonstrations, the RPA official noted that solely the Armenian national banner should be waved in any event in Armenia, and where there is a need to raise a flag.

To the query as to why both the Russian media and the aforesaid senior Russian official still continue to seek a Euromaidan in Armenia despite the fact that the Electric Yerevan protests have ended long ago, Sharmazanov responded: “The reasons may be very diverse, including a concern.”

The NA vice speaker added that this is a consequence of the fact that Russia, EU, and the US have their separate interests in the region, and each one of them is concerned based on its own interests.
