Supreme Election Council of Turkey refused to register Sevan Nişanyan, currently imprisoned famous Istanbul Armenian philologist, as an MP candidate.

Turkey’s Liberal-Democratic Party disseminated a statement on the refusal of Turkey’s Supreme Election Council to register Sevan Nişanyan, pointing to his arrest.

According to the statement, it’s strange that imprisonment on that charge was carried out only with regard to Sevan Nişanyan.

Nişanyan was promoted as a candidate by Turkey’s Liberal Democratic Party and topped the party’s list of candidates.

He repeatedly voiced the issue of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey and is eminent for his courageous behavior.

Being in jail, he stated that he is persecuted for his being Armenian and socialist.
