YEREVAN. – Armenia attaches great importance to peacekeeping efforts as a key instrument to reduce conflicts that pose a great threat to international peace and security, chief of the Armenian army Yuri Khachaturov said.
The analysis of the military and political situation in the world, the regions bordering with the zone of CSTO responsibility, including in the Caucasus region, shows that the likelihood of confrontation on the basis of political, ethnic, economic, religious and other conflicts is very high, and the peaceful settlement of timely peacekeeping without technology is impossible.
It contributed to the adoption by the heads of the CSTO member states the concept of formation and functioning of CSTO peacekeeping activity in 2004 and the signing of the agreement on peacekeeping activities in 2007
“Indestructible Brotherhood 2015” military exercises are the main event in a joint preparations for peacekeeping efforts, Colonel General Khachaturov added.
According to him, the current drills are the fourth in their history and in such a short period of time to talk about some very high achievements in terms of the interoperability of peacekeeping forces is probably premature, but it is necessary to move in this direction. Chief of General Staff stressed the participation of representatives of the ICRC in the events.
The exercise involved 600 representatives of the CSTO member states.
